What makes Missouri so haunted? And if it is so haunted, why don't you hear much about these haunts? The answer to the first question boils down to Missouri's rich history. Missouri was the 24th state to be admitted into the union on August 10, 1821. Known as the Gateway to the West, because of the great overland routes that led from Missouri to California and Oregon and also know as the Show Me state. Congressman Willard D Vandiver made a statement in 1899 "I come from a country that raises corn, cotton, cockleburs, Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I'm from Missouri. You've got to show me. After that, Missouri became known as the Show Me State". Missouri was known as the western frontier. Each generation hosted notorious, famous and often times ruthless people. Such examples would be Jesse James, The Younger Gang, Contrail and the Raiders, The Dalton Gang, and many famous gangsters, .etc, etc Events that unfolded within Missouri is a large key to these haunts. First we must look at the gunslingers of Missouri. With outlaws such as the ones mentioned above, we have traumatic deaths that follow in their footsteps and we know with traumatic deaths follow a good chance that the spirit will linger behind. This is truly a large stepping-stone for haunts in Missouri.
After the gunslingers, we have to look at the many wars that were fought in Missouri, the most famous being the Civil War. To many people's surprise, Missouri had more battles in the state then they had in the entire Civil War. The battles held no notoriety such as Gettysburg and others of that nature, but they had the same end result, "Death"! The Civil war also brought a general order for Bates County and some of the other surrounding counties that ordered those living in the country to move to selected cities while the war was going on. This was to eliminate sympathizers. If they did not move, they were burned out. History tells us that whole towns were burned out, to never return or rebuild. This type of event is a large key to haunts around those counties. Yet another famous event occurred in Kansas City at the Union Station in which gangsters had a shoot out with local law enforcement officers. It is known as the Union Station Massacre. These are just a few of the many horrific events that occurred in Missouri. If you were to study some more of the history you would find other events such as these. With this, we know that Missouri held all the elements for haunts. From what we know today, these elements have played through and Missouri is a very haunted state. So you ask, why don't you hear about them? Well again we have to look at the history and the location of the state. We will not go into the history, but we can tell you the number one reason is, "Missouri is known as the Bible Belt". Haunts and Ghost have been perceived and looked upon as evil and demonic in nature and therefore was frowned upon by the Church. People who experienced haunts or saw ghost had nowhere to turn, for fear of rebuttal by their Christian neighbors. To this day, people do not talk about ghost and haunts as freely as they would in other states. But we must say, as the younger generations grow, the paranormal is talked about more freely. As time moves forward and people become aware that Ghost Hunters or Paranormal Investigators are not an occult and are not crazy lunatics, but are armature scientist with a yearning to learn more about ghost and haunts and with each passing day more and more people are coming forward with their paranormal experiences and reporting their haunts.
