05 May 2001 - Missouri Ghost Hunters Society (Brian, Linda, Mike and our Son Daniel) Headed out to Joplin, MO to experience the sighting of the Hornet Spook Light. Following directions that were obtained from the Internet, we attempted to locate the area. All the directions we found on the Internet were way off and like others we spent over an hour trying to locate the exact area. So before we go any further, here is the correct directions to the Hornet Spook Light. Take I-44 West from Joplin. Just before the Oklahoma boarder, take Highway 43 South. Go on 43 for 6.3 Miles until you come to Iris, turn right on Iris and go until the road comes to an end in a "T" intersection. This is State line road. Turn right and go to the second graveled left road, which is East 50 Road. This is Devil's Promenade Road, as the nick name was given to it. Go down this road for about 1/2 to 1 mile and find a place to park We arrived at about 5:00 P.M. with plenty of daylight to get a lay of the land. We talked with a local elderly couple that had a farm on that road and was not surprised by what they had to say about the Hornet Spook Light. The ditches that run along both sides the entire roadway were filled with garbage, beer bottles, etc. So we had a good idea how they felt. Their complaints were mainly about local teens that come out and party, litter, get drunk and make no attempt to clean up after themselves. So if you ever do go to the Hornet Spook Light and arrive early, please bring a few trash bags and maybe pick up some while you are there. For if this activity continues, this wonder that drives people to travel hundreds of miles to see, might end up being closed. Not long before dark the cars stated to come. Most had been there before, for there appeared to be an unwritten way of doing things out there. People drove with their parking lights on to be polite as not to shine there headlights in your eyes. Even in the daylight, what appeared to be locals, would wave their hand in a friendly gesture.

Missouri Ghost Hunters Society - Brian, Linda and Daniel Lile Gateway Ghost Hunters Association - Mitch Fletcher
The evening was promising to be a perfect night to view the Hornet Spooklight. No wind, clear skies and very mild temps. Missouri Ghost Hunters Society (Brian, Linda and Daniel) teamed up with one of the Founders of Gateway Ghost Hunters Assoc. (Mitch) out of St. Louis for a night of Spooklight chasing. Arriving at about 11:30 P.M. we appeared to be the only car up to that point in the road. Parking, we set up our equipment and focused our sights to the West. About 1/2 hour had passed and a car with a couple from Springfield pulled up and asked to join us. Standing in the road we all stood gazing down the dark and quiet road. The only noises were an occasional owl and at one point a pack of coyotes sang their song of the night. After about 1/2 hour, the couple from Springfield decided to drive up the road and check things out, promising to return if they spotted anything. To our amazement, within 20 minutes or so, the couple came back and advised us that there was a truck just over the hill and while talking with them, they pointed out the Spooklight down the road. We loaded up and followed the couple. Cresting over the top of the hill was a white truck and several people were looking and pointing Westward down the road. We parked, got out and low and behold, what looked like a 1/4 of a mile or so was a amber light that danced up and down and appeared to be stationary. The only other light source in that direction was a blue in color street light to the right of the road. Linda and Brian began to walk down the road toward the Spooklight and within 100 feet or so the light disappeared. Walking back we were informed by Mitch that the light never left and was always visible to him. We all decided that we need to see what was beyond the light. So we piled in the van and headed toward the light. Again, within about 100 feet the light disappeared. We began to go down the hill and still could not find a light source that would have a produced the amber colored light. We continued and crested another hill which was smaller then the one we were on when we witnessed the Spooklight. Still there was no light source visible that could of created the amber light. Again we continued and crested a larger hill that was taller then the rest of the hills. Off in the horizon was numerous lights of a distant city. There stood two amber lights, but they were very small and difficult to see. We ruled these lights out, for they were to small and dense in intensity, plus the hill we were on, would not allow the viewing of these lights from our original position where we sighted the Spooklight. We headed back and parked the car, only to get out and find that the Spooklight was still present and dancing up and down emitting a strong amber color. Brian interviewed a gentleman from Joplin who stated that he had been coming out here for the last two months and got hooked on the Spooklight after he and his wife had a close encounter with the light. He went on to say that one night while driving east on Spooklight road, he and his wife would drive 30 feet at a time, while his wife hung out the passenger side window looking for the light. To both their amazement, 20 feet back, hovering in the ditch was a large sphere like ball of light, about the size of a basketball. It emitted a powerful amber light and held a three D type appearance. Since that encounter they have been coming back almost nightly to view the Spooklight. Mitch, Linda, Daniel and Brian decided that we needed to drive toward the Spooklight one more time to find a natural or man made light that could be the cause. Again, the light disappeared within 100 feet or so. We had the same results as before, no visible man made or natural source that could cause the amber Spooklight. One theory that was possible was ruled out in a matter of minutes. It was angel verses distance. The same cosine theory that is used in speed verses angles. Using the formula for this mathematical equation of speed verses angles, Brian applied this theory to angle verses distance. The basic formula is if a light source is at an angle and we travel away from the source, they light will appear to move inward. So a light that could be 1/2 mile or so to the north would appear to move in the direct line of sight at a further distance away. But the only problem was that there were no amber lights visible, just blue street lamps. We went ahead and applied that to one blue in color street light and as we had expected the light did indeed move inward, but still maintained about a 1/2 mile distance to the left of the Spooklight. Upon returning to the place we spotted the Spooklight, we got out of the car only to view the Spooklight fade away until there was just darkness and a lone blue streetlight to the right of where the Spooklight was. By viewing what was believed to be the Hornet Spooklight and what others have identified and swear by it being the Spooklight, we found we had more questions then answers we expected to get this night. So the question is, Was this indeed the Hornet Spooklight that we saw? According to others who witness this on a regular basis, it was indeed. But why stationary, many reports state that the light moves from both sides of the road and is often reported as changing colors. Tonight it stood stationary. Many report that the Spooklight sometimes stands stationary and at other times it travels. What every the case is, we believe that we did indeed see the Spooklight and we do have plans to attempt to record the different colors, movements and other factors that are present when the light is visible at a later date.
We must state one thing that will improve your chances on seeing the Spooklight. When you turn onto Spooklight road, go 1.6 miles until you come atop a large hill. That is the point you want to sit and look west. Again, the road is still covered with litter and we encourage anyone who visits the Spooklight to please bring trash bags along and maybe fill up a sack or two and please help keep the area clean. Maybe together we can clean up the area and promote a litter free area, so others will have the benefit of traveling to this wonderful site to see the Hornet Spooklight. We fear that if the litter continues, that the complaints by locals could bring a closing of the road. This would be a great downfall and a step backwards in paranormal investigations.

We arrived just before dark and setup to capture the Hornet Spook Light on video. We have some new High Tech equipment to video the light and we were very excited to put this equipment to the test. Brian, Linda and Don of Missouri Ghost Hunters Society set up the equipment and stood by waiting for darkness.

It wasn’t long before some interesting things began to happen. As Linda, Don and I were standing next to Brian’s Truck the area just above the truck was illuminated from an unknown light of an unknown origin. This light was so intense that it interfered with Don’s vision as he was looking right at the area from which the light came from. Brian saw the light from the corner of his eyes as it shown down on the truck. The light was blue in color and only lasted for a split second. About 5 minutes after the light had illuminated us, a car pulled up to us with two male occupants. The driver asked us what had happened as he and his passenger had witnessed a blue light shine above our truck. He stated that it appeared to be diamond shape and had only lasted about 1 second. We told the two males what we had witnessed and they were very interested in what had just happened to us. They pulled away and we stayed in that location for a couple of hours more. Still no sign of the Hornet Spook Light. We knew that we were not in the right area to see the spook light, as we were attempting to gather different evidence that had been reported in that area. We headed back east to the hilltop that provides an ideal location for witnessing the Hornet Spook Light. We must say that we were not disappointed, for the light came right away. The Spook Light, this night, was blue and white in color and was very active. We watched the Light and video taped the Light for over an hour as this light would get so intense that one would swear that it was the light of a locomotive. The Light danced from right to left, split into several different lights only to converge into one light again. The Spook Light appeared to come closer to us, then start all over again, by splitting again and again into several different lights. Sometimes splitting into two different lights with the light intensity so bright that it shown down the road toward us illuminating the roadway. By using some very advanced Night Vision, we were able to video tape the Hornet Spook Light and the surrounding area. Below is a video segment of that night. Now I must state that we have over an hour or so of the Hornet Spook Light and we have provided just a small clip for you to witness this truly mysterious Light. Enjoy and feel free to e-mail us your Hornet Spook Light story.

The above video was taken by Brian, Linda and Don on 19 September 2011. The Hornet Spook light made it’s way across the road and back several times, the light split into 3 different lights on several occasions. There was a red light that moved out of the light toward the east and then moved back into the main light. This went on for nearly an hour or so. This is just a short clip from numerous video coverage that we collected that night. We all had personal experiences that night.

10 October 2011, Missouri Ghost Hunters Society, Brian & Linda Lile, Don Overton, Greg & Glendy Powell and Derek Nesbit arrived at the Hornet Spook Light to meet with The Travel Channel as we were conducting a filming with the Travel Channel for an upcoming Travel Channel Show, “Legends of the Ozarks”, which we were being featured in that segment investigating the Hornet Spook Light. After arrival, we were provided with law enforcement assistance for traffic and Protection, as this road at the Hornet Spook Light is very narrow and a dangerous road already. Before we go any further, We want to thank the Sheriff’s Department for their kindness and much appreciated protection. They were very kind to us and very helpful, they went above and beyond what was required of them and provided us with so much more. Our hats off to the Sheriff’s Department for their support. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We got our equipment set up and ready to go when we met with the Producer and Executive Producer of “The Legends of the Ozarks” and as they set up the filming set, they asked Brian to stand in front of the camera for the opening interview. As Brian Stood their, Linda told Brian that the Hornet Spook Light was already out. Here it was Bright and Sunny with about 30 minutes left of day light and the light was out shinning a BRIGHT AMBER color. It was so bright it reminded one of the sun set. But the light was south of the road this time and slowly moved toward the North. As Brian turned to look, the filming crew saw the light and got very excited over seeing the Hornet Spook Light. It was hard for them to stay at the task at hand as the light continued to amaze them. They began the interview with Brian and during the interview, the Hornet Spook Light continued to move north near the road and danced with a vibrant color of amber as it would split and join over and over. The Hornet Spook Light was diamond shaped in color and was a very bright amber light. The light stayed out the entire night of filming. During the night their were several accounts that Brian, Linda, Greg, Glendy, Derek and the Producers witnessed as red lights would shoot out of the field to the left of us, about 1/8 of a mile a head, these lights would travel south out of the field, red in color and shoot into the roadway at a high rate of speed, then they would disappear. This was truly amazing as these red lights came and went on several different occasions. Below is another video segment of the Hornet Spook Light that was captured on video this night. Also below is a photo album of photos that we took that night of the filming. Enjoy. If you would like to see your Hornet Spook Light story, photos and videos of your Hornet Spook Light experience, please e-mail them to us and please make sure you state in your e-mail that you give us permission to post your story, photos and video’s and then we will post them below.
